Whenever a prominent honors show draws close, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game got overlooked completely in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games in the world and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
